Last night we found it hard to get to sleep, due to a constant “clunk, clunk, clunk” noise. It seemed to be coming from the front yard, but we couldn’t see anyone or anything that might be causing it. This morning I went downstairs to hang washing, and the noise was still going! I tracked it down to a drainpipe, but couldn’t see anything. I assumed it was a frog.
Tonight after I got home from work, the noise was STILL going, though now it was coming from the front. I have a small pond in the front yard, which I had always intended to fill in. It would be nice to have fish or frogs in there, but it seems to harbour cane toads and mosquito larvae as well. I had a look in the pond (which is now full of water again, after all the recent rain) and after some careful searching under the branches, found 3 small frogs and a giant cane toad.

After comparing the photos to known Brisbane frogs, we came to the conclusion that they are Salmon-Striped Frogs or Striped Marsh Frogs. It seems as though we will have thousands of tadpoles soon, due to all the spawn that was floating in the pond. I think I’ll have to fill it in before then…

One of the things I knew would need replacing eventually in my new house was the stove. One of the elements had fallen down, and the oven didn’t seem to keep the right temperature. And then there was the ticking noise. It had a clock built in which didn’t keep the correct time, and would keep me awake at night with its loud ticking. We decided to try and stop the clock, and somehow ended up with the grill staying permanently on!

To be honest, I wasn’t really saddened by the demise of our brown beauty. Aside from it not working as well as I imagine it did in the 70s, the back of it is quite high (above the bench level) and the kitchen cupboard just bangs up against the oven, instead of being able to close properly. Below is the new stove, thanks to Price Pirate (same place I got my washing machine!).

I’m getting the outside of the house painted in the next few weeks, and really have no idea what colours I want (to be honest, I don’t care). At the moment there’s barely any paint on there – who knows how long since it was last painted. I decided to go with a creme colour and blue around the window frames etc. Something like these:

Ivory

Woad Blue
